I'm thinking maybe their legal department is being over cautious. But the company's I've worked for have paid a lot of money to VMware, and I work almost exclusively with it, that if this is there official position I'm quite concerned by it. VMware Workstation 8 had support for Mac OS X Lion (Fusion definitely has it).then with a patch (not sure which) removed it.which lends support for his comment and stance. In fact some Linux enterpriise distors (Redhat, Oracle and SuSE at least ) are not free but require the purchase of a license.
My main interest here tehcnical not legal as I've been owrking with multiboot setups for almost 20 yeas - before VMware was created!. I wonder how Apple is dealing wit hWindow s8 bootcamp setups - but again I am naturally a curious fellow. Naturally Linux OS itself is free but my copy of Windows is free as well (Windows CP). Nevertheless I can create a VM using VMware 8 (licensed), copy it tgo Windows and test the upgrad options for the Beta in the Windows VMware program. This is imprtant to me in testing right now since, while I have installed the VMware Betaa for Windows (free until 10/15/12) I can't in Linux since I'm using kernel 3.5 on my 3 Linux distros. I freelyi copy VM's created by Windows and Linux VMware programs to and from Windows or Linux partions and use VMware for Linux and Windows to run them as is appropriated. This might or might not be available unless he purchased VMware Fusion - I have no idea - he may even be able to find a standalone version of the required Tools which would be free. It seems to me that this poster is merely looking for VMware Tools for his virtual VM. I would defintely use my Workstation for Windows license in a legal bootcamp setup. That could change at anytime of course if I purchased Lion and Apple branded hardware. At this moment this question if somewhat technical rather than legal rathe for me. I had no problem with that at all and told the moderators who were very gracious and respectful in their responses to me privately. About a week ago I asked the same question about bootcamp as this poster made. I too would be interested in the resolution of this question.
